We Are IH: Nurse turned safety manager thankful for opportunities

After starting her career as a registered nurse (RN) and working at Kelowna General Hospital, Shannon Campbell never guessed that she would transition into a safety career 18 years later. 

Now, as manager of workplace safety strategy, Shannon credits the opportunities that were provided to her by Interior Health for making a career change that has been extremely rewarding.

Shannon started her journey in Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) as a project coordinator, then as a violence prevention advisor and lead for both Interior Health and Northern Health, when the two health authorities shared a department.

She was promoted to manager, prevention, WHS before transitioning to her current role. 

As a lifelong learner, Shannon strives to learn and grow her knowledge every day.

Shannon’s proudest moments include supporting clients and families in her clinical years, and developing and growing a safety program and safety culture within IH. She’s also extremely proud of the WHS team IH has built, which does an incredible job supporting safety.

When not working, Shannon enjoys travelling, especially to Europe and anywhere tropical. Her personal highlight is Ireland, to which she’s travelled five times. She continues to return to Ireland to experience more of its history and scenery, and explore her ancestral roots. While travelling, Shannon especially loves seeing new places, meeting people and learning about different cultures.

Shannon is motivated to help IH in continuing to build a strong safety culture, and is looking forward to planning more personal travel adventures!
