Heart Treatments & Procedures
There are many treatments and procedures that may be used to treat and manage heart conditions. What treatments or procedures you need will be determined in discussion with your health care provider and based on your specific health condition.
A procedure used to correct an irregular heart rhythm by using heat or cold to disrupt the electrical pathways and create a normal heart rhythm. This includes ablations and implanted heart devices.
There are several types of Cardiac Ablations:
- Atrial Fibrillation Ablation
- Atrial Flutter Ablation
- Atrioventricular (AV) Node Ablation
- Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) Ablation
- Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) Ablation

A procedure to correct irregular or fast heart beats that are making you feel unwell. An electrical current is delivered to the heart to return the heart beat to a normal rhythm.
These procedures are done to correct irregular heart rhythms that are causing symptoms such as fainting or loss of consciousness.

An operation that is completed to help improve blood flow to the heart or to repair structures within the heart.
- Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A surgical procedure to re-route blood flow around one or more blockages in the heart arteries (Coronary Arteries)
- Heart Valve Repair or Replacement: A surgical procedure to repair or replace one or more valves that no longer work effectively

Pacemakers
A small electronic device that helps your heart beat at the right rate. When needed, it sends an electrical impulse to your heart, triggering a heartbeat.
Patient Information Booklet: Pacemakers
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)
A small electronic device that is surgically inserted to help with very fast heart rates or dangerous life-threatening electrical activity in the heart. The ICD monitors for dangerous rhythms and may provide an electrical shock to help put the heart back into a normal rhythms. An ICD can also be a pacemaker of the heart beats too slow.

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT)
A small cardiac device that uses small electrical impulses to allow the left and right side of the heart to pump at the same time, increasing the strength of the heart. This may be used as a treatment for heart failure.

A procedure done to replace the aortic valve by inserting a tube in the femoral artery placing an artificial valve directly over the existing valve
