Medical Societies

Doctors of BC is a voluntary association of 14,000 physicians, residents and medical students in British Columbia. Working together, Doctors of BC aims to make a difference for BC’s doctors so that they can make a difference for patients.

Joint Collaborative Committees (JCCs) are a partnership between Doctors of BC and the B.C. government that aims to improve B.C.’s healthcare system. The JCCs engage and support collaboration between doctors, government, health authorities, patients, families, and other partners to make a difference.

There are four committees within JCCs: 

Medical Staff Associations (MSAs) comprise facility-based medical staff who engage with health authorities to collectively address health care system challenges and support quality patient care. Key contacts for MSAs are the Engagement Partners, who act in a neutral capacity to collaborate with health authorities, community partners, and clinicians in MSAs and Divisions of Family Practice across the province.

Physician Societies are attached to MSAs as a funding mechanism through the Facility Engagement Initiative, a program of the Specialist Services Committee, to improve care and medical staff culture.

Divisions of Family Practice are community-based groups of family physicians working together to achieve common health care goals. Divisions work collaboratively with community and health care partners to enhance local patient care and improve professional satisfaction for physicians, dentists, midwives, and nurse practitioners working in the community.

There are seven Divisions in the Interior region and four Interior Chapters of the Rural and Remote Division.

The Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC) is the professional association for midwives in B.C. and is registered under the Societies Act. The MABC sustains midwifery through advocacy, professional services, and public awareness, positioning midwives as primary care leaders in perinatal and sexual healthcare. 

The British Columbia Dental Association (BCDA) is the recognized voice of dentistry in BC, dedicated to serving the interests of its members and promoting oral health for all British Columbians. 

BCDA's mandate is to provide programs, services, and support for its members. Through collaboration and partnerships, BCDA members also receive advocacy support and practice services provided by the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) and other dental organizations and suppliers. BCDA offers additional oral health resources for the public at yourdentalhealth.ca

The Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of British Columbia (NNPBC) is the professional body representing all nursing professions in British Columbia. The NNPBC supports and promotes excellence in nursing practice, education, research, leadership and policy by advocating for healthy public policy, promoting excellence in nursing practice and empowering nurses to actively influence and shape decisions that affect the profession and the public they serve.

The Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS) is a not-for-profit society that offers legal advice, risk-management services, legal assistance and professional liability protection related to nursing practice in Canada.
