Career Exploration

Interior Health (IH) is providing career exploration job shadow experiences for grade 10, 11, 12 and high school students, post-secondary students, and community members.

Through these job shadows, participants will observe and learn about health-care career paths and experience health-care settings and receive supportive mentorship from IH teams.

Job shadows are available in placements of two-to-four-hour durations and available in a variety of departments, not including physician shadowing or critical care areas. Each request will be assessed from an operational perspective and based on capacity available at the requested IH site.

Job shadows allow participants to gain a better understanding of what a specific career looks like in real life.

Participant will be matched with a host employee in the department they request, and this host employee will provide them with a tour, information about their job, and opportunity to observe them working with a patient (if appropriate), and to get any questions answered about the profession while they are with them.

Job shadow experiences generally last from two to four hours.

Not all departments can accommodate a job shadow experience and each manager will determine when and how many participants their department has capacity for. It does not include hands-on patient care.

Career exploration job shadow’s are available to participants who meet the any of the below criteria: 

• Secondary students (high school grades 10,11 and 12) seeking self-directed learning experiences or requiring an observational experience as part of the application process for a post-secondary institution health-care program
• Enrolled post-secondary students seeking a self-directed learning experience outside of an existing curriculum requirement
• Members of the community not currently employed with Interior Health
